Ghost of Tsushima is a game with a big world to explore and plenty to do, but the base game could always use more hanging out with animals and just having a good time. Luckily, developer Sucker Punch has noted this and is making a change. The upcoming Director’s Cut will take Jin Sakai to a place called Iki Island, where he’ll explore his past and resolve some traumas. When he’s not busy with all of that, he can take the time to just vibe with some cats, deer, and monkeys.
This is one of those gameplay decisions that doesn’t do a whole lot for the combat, but it’s absolutely delightful anyway. I am always down to pet a purring cat and play some beautiful flute music. In fact, I would play a game that was just that.
Jin can find animal sanctuaries across Iki Island where he can play soothing melodies with his flute to tame various animals. Once they’ve been calmed, Jin can return to pet them as often as you’d like. Cats are just one example. pic.twitter.com/SZmnbi0yLK

Monkeys also inhabit multiple sanctuaries, or can be found hanging around at some local hot springs. pic.twitter.com/nwYAAwXmvJ

At launch, Ghost of Tsushima allowed players to pet adorable foxes, and later on, players could pet dogs, so this isn’t an entirely new feature. However, the variety is great, because the more animal friends I can collect the merrier.
Sucker Punch shared some videos of these animal friends in action, and they are very carefully animated to appear super-friendly. The rest of the environment is also verdant and lush, with butterflies hovering nearby and the sound of nature in the background. This is a prime example of how games can make sure you stop and smell the roses — or pet the cat, in this case.
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will launch Aug. 20 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
