Fortnite Chapter 7 has arrived, and Season 1 brings several fresh mechanics to the battle royale — including the ability to roll while downed. The update also introduces floppy, ragdoll-like animations reminiscent of Helldivers 2, so players can unexpectedly tumble down slopes or be hurled through the air by teammates and opponents.
Whether you’re playing with a squad or have one of the rare Self-Revive Devices, downed players can now roll as well as crawl. That extra mobility makes it easier to escape danger and reach a teammate for revival. You retain decent control while rolling — until terrain intervenes. On hills, the new limp physics can send your avatar careening far farther than intended, which is hilarious when planned and frustrating when your teammates are watching you tumble instead of getting you back into action.

It’s hard not to laugh. Responding to one clip on X, Fortnite design director Ted Timmins revealed that the team found testing the tumbles delightfully absurd: “I remember in the internal playtest reviews for this having tears in my eyes as we practiced tumbling down hills over and over again.”
Those floppy animations become very apparent when downed players are struck or shoved by vehicles. Social feeds are filled with clips of players being launched in dramatic, often hilarious ways — many of which are embedded below for your enjoyment.

Some players have been quick to note the animation isn’t a perfect, full-body ragdoll — characters aren’t as wildly flail-prone or skyward-bound as in Helldivers 2 — but the effect is still entertaining. It feels like Epic borrowed a page from Arrowhead’s playbook, and I’m all for it.
Fortnite Chapter 7 was crafted to steer the game “back to its battle royale roots,” even though the franchise originally evolved from other modes, and one lead has said they are “both in awe and hugely proud of this team.”
