“The highway is littered with people wanting to take on Fortnite, with people trying to do Overwatch with different skins,” Layden told The Ringer. It’s worth noting the irony of those remarks given Sony’s recent work on Marvel Rivals.
“If you’re trying to go into that space because you have this illusion in your mind of big sacks of money coming every day for the rest of your life, for most it doesn’t happen.”
Layden’s critique goes beyond market saturation. He told The Ringer he doesn’t always consider live-service products to be proper games, preferring to label them “repetitive action engagement device[s],” and said he values titles that emphasize strong characters, compelling stories, and immersive worlds.
Another single-player specialist is taking a live-service risk: the studio behind Heavy Rain is reportedly building a competitive multiplayer experience even as work continues on Star Wars: Eclipse.
