“It was not an easy decision,” he continued. “I moved to San Francisco and effectively became a one-person operation. Sega already had an arcade division in San Jose, but I founded and served as president of Sega of America. I hired the team, set up the operation, and prepared to take on Nintendo. We essentially used the same marketing approach I had developed at Nintendo.”

From there, efforts to place the Sega Master System into U.S. stores began almost immediately. Lowry faced little resistance getting the console on shelves because he already had established relationships with retail buyers—after all, he had sold many of them on the NES.

Lowry — the sales executive who helped launch the NES — later called Donkey Kong Jr. Math “the worst game we released,” noting that Nintendo believed its educational angle would sell, but “we couldn’t give it away.”
