Ellis said the $20 million figure probably refers only to in‑studio production costs. “I think that number is strictly development — there are additional costs, notably marketing, which can be substantial for Pokémon,” he noted.

Yang added that while development budgets weren’t visible to them, the company’s marketing spend was well known during their tenure. “We never saw the full development ledgers, but we understand how extensive Pokémon marketing can be. For a major AAA release like this, those promotional budgets can be large.”

Promoting Pokémon is complex because the franchise spans multiple media: trading cards, anime seasons, merchandise, the mainline games, Pokémon GO and live events all feed into a continuous cross‑platform marketing effort that keeps the series in the public eye.
