Ellis estimated that, based solely on the $13 million production figure and not including promotion costs, the title would break even at roughly 200,000 copies sold. He added, “I’m fairly confident Pokemon Legends Z-A will edge past 200,000 units, so that breakeven figure is surprisingly low.”
For perspective, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet together have moved about 27 million copies. Given those numbers, Ellis questioned why the franchise’s stakeholders don’t funnel more resources into the games.
“Why do these Pokémon titles sometimes feel underwhelming in areas like visuals and polish? It makes you wonder why The Pokémon Company wouldn’t invest more in what are essentially guaranteed cash‑generators,” he said, noting that the series has ample margin for additional spending compared with riskier AAA projects.
“I don’t understand the logic,” Yang responded. “You’ve got a surefire product that sells repeatedly. Why not spend a bit more so you don’t end up with terrible trees and windows?” she added, likening the reported budget choices to the behaviour of a stingy wealthy owner.
