Final Fantasy XIV’s Lovably Polygonal Grapes Have Snuck Into Pokémon Legends: Z-A

At the height of “GrapeGate” in 2021, PC Gamer interviewed a range of developers and posed the important question — “How many game developers does it take to make a banana explode properly?” (Turns out the answer is roughly six.)

“Every feature you add to a game creates future ‘technical debt’ for QA and bug fixes,” said Unfortunate Spacemen creator Geoff “Zag” Keene at the time. “As complexity increases, teams often need to expand to support it. The costs add up.”

The takeaway is straightforward: developers frequently trim detail on background props and decorative assets to save on processing and to reduce long-term maintenance. In short — be kind to Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s grapes. They’re optimized to balance performance and scope.

I’ve been waiting six years for Pokémon to bring back its most delightful features, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A gives me hope those returns are on the way.
