Final Fantasy XIV Isn’t on the Switch 2 — Fans Have Ported It to the Nintendo 2DS/3DS

Final Fantasy XIV is playable on most consoles and PC — the Switch 2 isn’t officially supported yet — but some fans have found an unconventional workaround: streaming the MMO to Nintendo’s older handheld, the 3DS (and its 2DS variants).

It’s not an official release, of course. The feat was showcased in a viral Reddit post by user Kragwulf, who shared photos of their Warrior of Light running on a 2DS XL. “I have done it,” they wrote. “This may possibly be the WORST way to play FFXIV ever made possible.” The images emphasize the handheld’s lower display area with a prominent home button and what looks like mapped L3/R3 controls.

Kragwulf also posted a thorough comment outlining the process: how to modify a 2DS/3DS, install the Moonlight streaming client, and stream the game from a PC to the handheld (Moonlight is known to work on other portable devices like the PlayStation Vita as well). After setting everything up, the method boils down to “connect and play.”

The poster explains that by treating the 3DS/2DS as a secondary display you can preserve the streamed image’s resolution and refresh rate. They even set the handheld as the primary display in Windows and disable their main monitor; when the handheld connects via Apollo, Windows recognizes it like any other screen being attached or detached, turning the main monitor off when the handheld is active.

It sounds like a clever hack, and it’s tempting to try — especially with ongoing chatter about a potential Switch 2 port. Director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has mentioned discussions with Nintendo about a possible port in the past, but until an official release arrives, creative streaming solutions let players enjoy the MMO on very portable hardware.

Capcom gave Monster Hunter Wilds a Final Fantasy XIV-themed raid boss, but the game’s recent Steam reviews plunged after players reported new performance and driver problems following that update.
