Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi says PlayStation’s narrative-focused titles were an influence on the remake’s development.
Few remakes carried as much fan expectation as Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The desire for a modern reimagining began almost as soon as the PS3 tech demo recreating the original surfaced in 2005. A decade later that anticipation only intensified, and when the remake was finally announced it arrived as a very different, modern AAA interpretation of the classic — even putting episodic structure and timeline aside.
For Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, where Hamaguchi moved from co-director to director, the team shifted toward a more open-world structure. He said that approach drew inspiration from games like The Witcher 3 — and, once again, The Last of Us. Whatever direction the eventual third installment takes (Final Fantasy 7: Reunion, Return, Rewind, Recede — only time will tell), The Last of Us appears likely to remain a creative touchstone.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake director pledges Part 3 news “in the not too far future,” saying he’s “running straight to my hotel room and back to checking some of the levels.”
