Final Fantasy Tactics director suggests Ivalice Chronicles remake could add routes to save dead characters — including one killed in chapter one — but says that would essentially be a new game

Boat from Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

Several NPCs feel like natural party members, and Yasumi Matsuno — the game’s original director — admitted he considered adding options to recruit more of them in the new edition, according to a post on X (via machine translation). A fan suggested that Izlude’s Nightblade class would have been a welcome addition; Matsuno replied that when he was assigned to the remaster, he proposed branching parts of the game so players could recruit characters such as Miluda and Izlude.

Matsuno explained that implementing those branches would have required altering the game’s fundamental structure, which made the change impractical. He noted that while a larger budget might have made it feasible, at that point it would effectively be better to build a new game from scratch.

Matsuno also said that Kazutoyo Maehiro, the director of The Ivalice Chronicles, was committed to faithfully remastering the original release. That insistence was another reason additional recruitment content — and elements from The War of the Lions — were not included.

One Final Fantasy Tactics player has even gone to extreme lengths to show that, in their game, chocobos can behave unpredictably — including abandoning the party if their Faith stat rises too high.
