A quick scan of Twitter reveals plenty of disappointed Kingdom Hearts 4 and Final Fantasy hopefuls. One user posted the meme of the IGN reporters at E3 with the caption: “No shade to Octopath Traveler 0 but this was literally me for a second just now.”
Some streamers’ live reactions captured the moment: streamer Cynical visibly bristled at the “Square Enix’s beloved series” tease, then laughed and said, “don’t do that” (they did add, “We love Octopath”). Meanwhile, Final Fantasy fan Bawkbasoup initially shouted at the tease before sinking into an audible, disappointed “aww.”
Realistically, a surprise Final Fantasy title or Kingdom Hearts 4 update would be significant enough that Square Enix would likely save it for a large, global showcase—events such as Summer Game Fest, the PlayStation Showcase, or The Game Awards—rather than a Japan-focused State of Play.
Kingdom Hearts 4 hopes surged from a single photo of Sora’s voice actor in the studio: “Y’ALL, IS IT TIME??? IS IT FINALLY TIME????”
