Game key cards have drawn criticism from preservation advocates and collectors: without a physical cartridge that boots the game, players become dependent on Nintendo’s digital storefront and distribution policies. While there’s no immediate reason to expect wholesale removals, the long-term archival implications are a concern.
Still, Hamaguchi thinks players and publishers will adapt. He said he doesn’t anticipate Nintendo prioritizing cartridge loading improvements and instead expects the company to promote the Game Key Card format more aggressively. From his perspective, developers and publishers can work together to make the transition smoother and help players understand the trade-offs involved.
According to reporting on GamesRadar, the acclaimed 2020 Final Fantasy 7 Remake is planned for Switch 2 in 2026. The remake will be released in a physical package using a game key card and requires around 90GB of storage.
