The founders began Embark with a simple discussion about the kinds of games they wanted to make — a rare conversation after years of focusing on precision shooters. Shadow of the Colossus was singled out by everyone as a standout experience and a shared inspiration.

“We were drawn to the idea of confronting massive foes,” Söderlund says. “If we were going to build robots, we wanted them to evoke the same sense of wonder and innovation that Shadow of the Colossus did on release — which pushed us to invest in machine learning and reinforcement-learning techniques.”

Fumito Ueda’s genre-defying monster-slaying epic has set the bar for scale and deliberate pacing since 2005. Its influence is evident in Arc Raiders’ colossal, kaiju-like machines and the way encounters are staged.

Coming from the Battlefield tradition of destructible, cinematic environments, Embark’s team are well placed to blend spectacle with emergent gameplay. My hope is that Arc Raiders captures that sense of scale without mirroring the bittersweet emotional punch of Wander’s journey in Team Ico’s classic.
