Cain also emphasized that he lacks the immense capital required to independently fund a modern CRPG. If he were to partner with a major publisher to secure financing, he would inevitably find himself in the same predicament: producing a hit while someone else reaps the lion’s share of the rewards. As a result, he has officially “moved on” from the desire to lead new franchises.
“If people want to know what makes me happy, I’m still building things and they bring me joy. But I’m finished making other people incredibly wealthy through my original work,” says Cain, who currently holds a full-time position at Obsidian Entertainment. Although his specific role remains undisclosed, it appears he is flourishing in a non-lead capacity, similar to his involvement with titles like Tyranny or South Park: The Stick of Truth.
Nevertheless, Cain hinted that his passion could be reignited under the right circumstances—namely, a total overhaul of the industry’s financial structures. “In the art world, when a painting sells, everyone involved in its legacy makes money,” he noted, suggesting a desire for a residual-based model that currently doesn’t exist in gaming.
