Expert: Ghost of Yotei lets you pet the fox because of “proper” research into Japanese history — but you could catch a tapeworm if you try today

Cysts from those parasites—worm cysts—are not something to take lightly. So, enjoy petting foxes inside Ghost of Yotei, but in reality it’s best to admire Ezo red foxes from a distance. A Japanese biologist, quoted via Automaton’s translation, praised the game for showing how careful historical research can pay off.

On Twitter, one account explains that “the Echinococcus is said to have been artificially introduced to Hokkaido via foxes brought from the Kurile Islands in the 1920s,” and that the parasite didn’t become widespread across Hokkaido until the 1980s. Because Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603, foxes of that era wouldn’t have carried Echinococcus—if they had, the game’s world would feel very different.

Ghost of Yotei studio head says the series probably won’t move to ‘feudal Europe’ or locations outside Japan: “We believe the core of Ghost is someone wielding a katana.”
