Another Meta Announcement, But Not for Sale: The Orion Augmented Reality Glasses Prototype
The glasses feature built-in Meta AI, which will assist users with daily tasks: for instance, you can open the fridge and request a recipe based on the available ingredients, translate live speech on the fly, make a video call to a friend, communicate in messengers hands-free, and more.
Meta claims that these are the smallest glasses with the widest field of view among all augmented reality glasses (microLED displays with a 70° field of view at a weight of 98g). They support gesture control without controllers, but a bracelet is still necessary for better recognition. The “brain” for the AI is housed in a small box that you need to carry with you, but the connection is wireless.
The main drawbacks are a battery life of less than two hours and a production cost of around $10,000. Therefore, Meta plans to test the glasses over the next few years among its employees and selected testers outside the company to refine the glasses and find ways to reduce costs.
