Dragon’s Dogma 2 Director Hideaki Itsuno: Potato Chips Were Key to Devil May Cry 5’s Development and Pacing — Built for One-Hour-a-Night Players

Itsuno explained that he designed the scenario flow around a simple concept: signal players when to take a breather — or, as he put it, when to grab some potato chips. By arranging cutscenes as clear pauses, he created natural breathing room between the game’s relentless, moment-to-moment combat.

He also noted the team assumed many players would only have roughly an hour a day to play, so each segment needed to feel satisfying on its own. Devil May Cry 5 is broken into 20 missions of varying lengths, which makes it approachable for players with limited time and convenient for replaying — something I took advantage of at launch.

Ghost of Yotei won praise from veteran creators behind Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry, with Team Ninja’s Fumihiko Yasuda saying he’s long wanted to build a game set in Hokkaido.
