Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo Arrives This Week With Progress Carry-Over

While the official launch of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is still a month away, eager fans will soon have the opportunity to experience its opening chapters. A free playable demo is set to arrive on January 7, and players will be able to carry their progress over to the full game when it debuts in February.

This title serves as a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of the classic 2000 RPG, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Moving away from the “HD-2D” aesthetic utilized in last year’s Dragon Quest I & II remakes, Reimagined features a distinct visual style characterized by diorama-like environments and charming, toy-like character models.

The remake introduces several modern gameplay refinements designed to respect the player’s time. Similar to contemporary titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio, players can now dispatch weaker enemies in the overworld without entering a separate combat screen. The turn-based battle system also includes a speed-up function to breeze through routine encounters. Additionally, the progression system has been deepened with the inclusion of an entirely new vocation and the ability to dual-class by taking on a second vocation simultaneously.

For those who found the original game’s 100-hour campaign daunting, this version aims to provide a more focused experience. The development team has prioritized better pacing and the reduction of unnecessary filler. “Even with the 3DS version of [Dragon Quest VII], the story was still quite long. So we came to a decision that we wanted to streamline the story, [and] make this experience for modern audiences,” producer Takeshi Ichikawa explained to Polygon in late 2025.

The Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo launches this Wednesday, January 7. The full adventure arrives on February 5, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
