Destiny 2 director: “We don’t want to be a dead live game” as Renegades hits a low — admits “relatively few new people come” and says Edge of Fate pivot “didn’t work”

None of this helps the current climate: many players disliked The Edge of Fate’s changes, and Bungie is now trying to reverse or soften recent decisions to win back those who left. Renegades won’t be a full overhaul — the studio hasn’t had the time for large-scale refactors — but Green says the expansion will address some of the most prominent complaints. He also believes Bungie’s cadence of two medium-sized expansions per year allows the team to react more quickly to player feedback.

“On paper it sounded great, but it didn’t land,” Green reflects on the Portal and Power changes. “Players are telling us they don’t want to chase a single number that increases — they want meaningful, tangible rewards.” Guilty as charged.

Perhaps the most telling line from IGN’s interview is Green’s assessment: “We’ve learned a set of hard lessons about what our players want. There are two kinds of live games: those that listen and adapt to their community, and those that don’t. We don’t want Destiny to be a dead live game; we want to keep building it.”

Bungie and the Star Wars owner collaborated to shape the tone of Renegades, ensuring it feels substantial rather than like a side quest.
