Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Verso Actor Prefers the Maelle Ending — “Choose it and you’ll see why I won this award” — Maelle’s Actor: “Let her live her delulu fantasy life”

Fans usually call these outcomes Maelle’s ending and Verso’s ending, since each conclusion is driven by one of those characters and culminates in their final conflict. Despite their characters’ opposing aims, both Jennifer English (Maelle) and Ben Starr (Verso) — who each earned acting accolades for their roles — agree on which ending they favor.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ at the Golden Joystick Awards, English declared her pick: “Maelle’s my girl — let her keep her deluded, joyful life.” She defended the choice by arguing that the painted world is simply another valid reality. Starr gave a more personal reason: “Maelle’s ending — I really like what I did there.” He encouraged players to choose that path to see the performance he’s proud of, saying it helped earn him his award.

Still, Starr noted that both conclusions can be read as Alicia’s choice, observing it’s a reflection on grief and how people cope: both options are defensible responses to loss. That perspective may comfort players who favor different endings — I picked Maelle and quickly regretted it, since I personally preferred Verso’s path.
