Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Stripped of GOTY Award Due to Generative AI Usage

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently experienced a dramatic reversal of fortune. After securing the prestigious Game of the Year and Debut Game titles at the Indie Game Awards this past Thursday, the celebration was cut short. By Saturday, the organization officially rescinded these accolades following revelations that the game launched with generative AI assets, despite earlier assurances to the contrary.

According to the updated Indie Game Awards FAQ, the disqualification was a direct result of a breach in transparency. The committee noted that Sandfall Interactive representatives had originally stated no generative AI was utilized during the development process. “In light of Sandfall Interactive confirming the use of gen AI art in production on the day of the Indie Game Awards 2025 premiere, this does disqualify Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from its nomination,” the organization clarified. While the studio swiftly patched out the AI-generated content, the initial inclusion was deemed a violation of eligibility rules, leading to the total retraction of their awards.

The IGAs Nomination Committee is officially retracting Debut Game and Game of the Year, awarding both categories to new recipients. Additionally, we are retracting one of the Indie Vanguard recipients. Full details can be found in our FAQ under Game Eligibility: www.indiegameawards.gg/faq

The controversy gained momentum after social media users unearthed an earlier interview with Sandfall’s François Meurisse. Speaking with the Spanish publication El País in June, Meurisse admitted to a marginal integration of generative technology to streamline production. He noted that the tech allowed the team to achieve results that were previously “unthinkable,” allowing them to focus their primary efforts on core gameplay elements.

Eagle-eyed players on X and Reddit had flagged suspicious textures shortly after the game’s debut. Sandfall responded by replacing the disputed assets with handcrafted alternatives in a patch released just five days later. However, the retroactive cleanup was not enough to satisfy the Indie Game Awards’ strict criteria regarding AI disclosure.

In the wake of the disqualification, the committee has redistributed the honors to the next highest-ranking contenders. The Debut Game award has been granted to We’re Closed, while the top prize of Game of the Year now belongs to Blue Prince. The developers of these titles are expected to provide formal acceptance speeches in early 2026.
