Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lead writer — who “hadn’t played any video games” before joining the hit French JRPG — is now speedrunning major titles and has platinumed Elden Ring, God of War and God of War Ragnarök

There’s been plenty of discussion about the unconventional way the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team formed, but the most surprising detail is the lead writer’s background — she hadn’t played video games before joining Sandfall Interactive.

In an interview with Lits Play, lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen said, “Before this, I did not play video games.” She explained that it wasn’t a deliberate choice so much as the reality of being the eldest child in “a very strict Chinese household” and the prohibitive cost of games at the time.

With encouragement from her husband, her first proper gaming experience was the Borderlands series. Today they have “two TVs, two PlayStations” and often play side by side. Svedberg-Yen calls herself a “trophy hunter” and has “platinumed Elden Ring, God of War, God of War: Ragnarok.” To go from a complete novice to earning a FromSoftware platinum in under five years is impressive, so when she says, “I guess you could say I play quite a lot of games these days,” it’s easy to believe she’ll continue playing for a long time.
