Charlie Cox — who has collected several nominations this awards season for voicing Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — has publicly redirected much of the credit for that performance to French performer Maxence Cazorla, saying his vocal work was only one part of a larger performance.
Addressing his Best Performance nomination at The Game Awards 2025, Cox made clear he believes the recognition should go to the motion-capture artist Maxence Cazorla. Cazorla contributed motion-capture and the French-language voice work for multiple characters in Clair Obscur, including Gustave, Esquie, Verso and Renoir.
Speaking about the nomination, Cox said he was delighted but reiterated that Cazorla carried most of the motion-capture performance for Gustave. He added that any praise or formal recognition the character receives should reflect Cazorla’s contribution, with Cox’s voice work serving as only one component of the final portrayal.
It’s a welcome move from Cox, and a rare public acknowledgement of the performers who often remain unseen behind major game characters.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was named Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025 — and many would argue it earned that title.
