Bungie and the owner of Star Wars shaped the tone of Destiny 2 expansion Renegades — “it can’t feel like a side quest”: “What’s the bad version of this?”

Given how visible Star Wars tie-ins have been in games like Fortnite, Bungie’s approach makes sense. It avoids that “everything becomes Fortnite” fatigue some shooters face (see recent trends in Call of Duty) and protects Destiny’s lore. Fortnite can roll out wildly out-there content with little friction — a giant Homer Simpson floating above the map, for example — which simply wouldn’t land the same way in Destiny’s universe.

It’s refreshing to see Bungie get approval for this crossover yet exercise restraint and preserve what makes Destiny distinct. Otherwise, this could have turned into something like Darth Vader as a raid boss or C-3PO as an offbeat companion.

With Destiny 2 facing declining player numbers, a sparse roadmap, and another canceled in-game currency, Sony has acknowledged the MMO hasn’t met expectations since Bungie’s $3.6bn acquisition.
