That discussion prompted Borderlands dataminer and creator EpicNNG to surface evidence suggesting Ava was originally included in Borderlands 4 but later removed. Files left in the code reportedly reference Ava by name, indicate planned interactions with Zane, and point to her bubble ability—closely mirroring what Amara now performs.
Alright I guess we’re gonna talk about it:AVA WAS CUT FROM BORDERLANDS 4There are numerous files related to her in the game, more specifically outlining that she was completely replaced by Amara late in development. EpicNNG notes there are no further direct references to Ava in the final build, but suggests those leftover files could indicate plans for her return in post-launch content—though that remains speculative for now. Ava generated controversy in Borderlands 3 because of certain creative choices, so her reduced presence here has reignited discussion among fans.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford previously polled fans about whether Borderlands 4 should bring back the Borderlands 3 cast, introduce new characters, or blend both; the mixed option won. When asked about Ava specifically, the community reacted strongly, splitting between those wanting her redeemed and those preferring she be left behind. One prominent fan voice highlighted the perceived loss: YouTuber SpeakingLions argued that Ava deserved a full narrative arc and the chance to grow beyond the controversy she faced, calling it “a generational story” that was cut short.
“Hopefully she comes back in a DLC, where she can show that she’s evolved since Borderlands 3,” another user wrote on X. “Although I think having her as a main character in the base game would’ve worked better — I also love Amara, so I’m torn.”
All signs point to Ava having had a larger part planned in Borderlands 4 before being reduced late in development. If you want to see her return, make your voice heard to Gearbox.
Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford could only respond “well, s***” after discovering a bug that prevented some Borderlands 4 players from sharing loot as intended; the studio says it’s addressing the issue.
