
Revisiting Oblivion nearly twenty years on gave the team a chance to “refresh” parts of the game and make deliberate choices about what to modernize and what to preserve. After all, much of Oblivion’s charm comes from its quirks—like NPCs unexpectedly brawling in town squares—which contribute to its distinct memories.
“Those conversations were really fascinating and occasionally difficult,” Mustaine admitted. The team debated changes carefully—asking themselves whether certain updates were necessary—and ultimately chose adjustments that respected the original while avoiding anything that would break the game’s spirit.
Following Oblivion Remastered and Hi-Fi Rush, Bethesda Game Studios’ director expressed a desire for more shadowdrops, observing that “we all have shorter attention spans now.”
