Bethesda makes an apologetic statement after a support site glitch revealed personal info

December 6, 2018 After a glitch revealed support tickets on the Bethesda website to unauthorised users, the company has made a statement.

Yesterday, a major glitch at the Bethesda website revealed a number of customer support tickets to other issues. The site was quickly taken down and a fix was issued, but not before a number of users reported gaining access to a distressing amount of personal information. Bethesda has now issued a statement that includes an apology along with details on what happened and what the company plans to do next.

“During the incident, it appears that the user name, name, contact information, and proof of purchase information provided by a limited number of customers on their support ticket requests may have been viewable by other customers accessing the customer support website for a limited time, but no full credit card numbers or passwords were disclosed. We plan to notify customers who may have been impacted.”

While Bethesda specifies that “full credit card numbers” were not revealed, that proof of purchase info could include receipts with the last few digits of your payment information. The bug was reported by myriad players yesterday afternoon, with users on Reddit, Twitter, and the official forums describing pretty much the same experience. One says to “please rest assure I have no desire to stalk you or mess with your Fallout 76 experience,” though players remain understandably concerned that not everyone who got access to this info will be so nice.

Bethesda’s support site went down for maintenance around the time these issues were reported, and shortly afterward company reps said the issue was fixed, though we didn’t get much additional detail at the time.

The statement concludes “Bethesda takes the privacy of our customers seriously, and we sincerely apologize for this situation.”
