Twitter user Ren Masao Ankoku was browsing the timeline connected to Astarion in the Astarion’s Book of Hungers expansion on D&D Beyond when they spotted evidence suggesting two recent Forgotten Realms sourcebooks — Heroes of Faerûn and Adventures in Faerûn — are set a few years after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. Both volumes include characters from the game, and Karlach is among them.
If you followed Karlach’s quest through to its conclusion, you know the core of her story: she carries a failing mechanical heart — often called an infernal engine — that threatens her life. Karlach’s personal arc revolves around finding a way to repair or replace that device; without intervention it will fail.
