Big Slappy

About

Big Slappy refers to a viral image macro of Team Fortress 2 character Scout's behind captioned "big slappy." After going viral in 2016, the image has since been a frequent subject of references, memes and fan art.

Origin

On November 14th, 2008, Gamebanana^[1] user Spiderm4N submitted custom Team Fortress 2 spray "Scout Ass" to the site. The spray depicts a Red Scout mid-run, his buttocks arched towards the viewer (shown below). The spray accumulated over 9,400 views and 700 downloads in twelve years.

Prior to March 2016, the image saw limited spread online, acquiring the name "Big Slappy" approximately in mid-2014. On September 29th, 2012, Tumblr^[2] user spainstateofmind made the earliest post indicative of the spread of the image, posting it in a Tumblr thread of NSFW Team Fortress 2 artworks (screenshot shown below, left). On August 26th, 2014, DeviantArt^[3] user sniper-da-booty posted an artwork titled "Big Slappy" based on the image (shown below, right). However, the exact originator of the name and the website where it got popularized are unknown.

On March 29th, 2016, Tumblr^[4] user eversonitro posted a screenshot of a thumbnail preview of the image, titled "big slappy," with the image macro gaining over 9,100 likes and reblogs in four years (shown below).

Spread

Following the viral spread of eversonitro's post, starting in late March 2016 memes based on the image were posted on Reddit, iFunny and other online platforms. For example, on May 6th, 2016, Redditor^[5] maginnster posted a meme that gained 20 upvotes (shown below, left). On May 24th that year Urban Dictionary^[6] user rabidspanial added a definition for "big slappy." On December 16th, 2016, Redditor^[7] keroro1454 posted a meme that received over 280 upvotes (shown below, right).

On January 31st, 2017, gimmick Tumblr^[8] account Big Slappy was created, posting the image macro on a daily basis. In the following years, the image has been a popular subject of memes, references and fan art. In late November 2020, the image and the catchphrase "big slappy" received a boost in popularity due to an edited image^[9] of streamer Jerma985 and a humorous video^[10][11] by in which he wore butt pads.

Steam Workshop Item

On August 29th, 2022, Steam^[12] user Coolchou Zhao added a Scout cosmetic inspired by the meme to the Steam Workshop (shown below).
