GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 7] - The one with the announcement

Just say it's a DAB radio or something lol. There's a lot of ways they can solve the radio problem if they have multiple cities, it's not a roadblock at all.

Not necessarily.

The issue with big maps in 2022 is not so much that they're hard to run but that they're hard to fill. The hurdle R* would have to get over with a map the size of that image is not being able to run it but being able to get all of it to R*'s level.

Modern game engines, asset streaming tech, SSD's, etc, all make massive maps doable from a technical stand point. Asset creation however is the issue.

Maybe, but even playing E&E on the Series X things still struggle to render in at speeds.

And, as you noted, asset creation. I've noticed most games I play with big maps have nowhere near the same level of GTA V.

Plus, while some may want a bigger map, I think V's is the perfect size. Just big enough for you to groan when you have to go to Paleto from the City, but not big enough for that really to be that big of an issue.

Impossible is a bit strong a word.

Nowadays there are a lot of big internet based DAB stations that are listened to globally (beats one). You can guarantee they will make a mimic of Spotify to some degree. So say they did 8-10 of those and then a few smaller FM stations based on your locale, that would be fine and doable.

Not every car has a modern radio system.

They are, same station, just different name and call sign.

96.9 The Eagle, classic rock

104.1 The Hawk, classic rock

They both have the same exact content. Same music, same syndicated radio spots, the only thing that's different is the calls sign and SOME of the programs because of local hosts. Oh, and the weather will be different.

Hell, a lot of these radio stations are even owned by the same company.

Here is an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_radio_stations_owned_by_iHeartMedia

Cool lets add Los Santos Rock radio to Vice City

Could easily be a limitation of GTAV's engine, it's such an old engine, its age goes beyond the 2013 release date and software tech improved so much since then

From my ignorant point of view that map is possible because Euro and American Truck Simulator have map expansions every half a year and they did the whole Europe in a 1:20 scale but of course their work is not on Rockstar's level and you're very limited in a driving sim.

Wish I could understand how that sh*t works tho :sadkek:

RDR2's amount of detail over GTA on such a big map is telling - it handles it a lot more gracefully even on the older consoles.

Maybe if RDR2 were delayed to 2019, maybe we could had all those cut content?

Maybe, but I think it would have been mostly smaller scale stuff, like some more easter eggs and interesting objects we can sketch in Arthur's journal. Perhaps some more stages of the missing Princess concept. IMO Mexico never would have been in the game. I think it was an early concept that never got off the ground. Guarma is more interesting, because Rockstar really did put a ton of work into that island. Seriously, there are even indigenous style Gold idols that can be found in the files! I think Rockstar had massive plans for it, realized it completely destroyed the pacing, and then downsized it significantly. Either that, or the work put in to Guarma was before the story changed drastically or something like that. A delay to 2019 would not have changed much in my opinion.

GTA V's a game intended to run on near 20 year old hardware. RAGE has had yonks of improvements since then. I doubt they'd have any problems with the technical side with VI if they went for a massive map, it's just yea, asset creaiton.

For me I think V's map is no where near big enough to give the feeling of scale. Sandy shores should have the feeling of being in the middle of no where but in reality it just feels like it's on the other side of a hill. Paleto feels a bit further out there but they're once again using a big hill (mountain in this case) to give a sense of vast distance travelled between locations. It doesn't work IMO.

People need to stop being afraid of a bit of deadspace in open world games IMO. Some large fields, or swamps, or deserts, whatever it may be. You don't have to cram every nook and cranny of the map with immense detail and things to do, deadspace can be done in a believable and realistic way and help create a much better sense of scale to boot.

The key is in the details.

No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous are ridiculous in their size. With Elite being a 1:1 scale of the Milky Way Galaxy. But the level of detail is nowhere near on the level of R* games, and neither is the variety of mechanics or gameplay activities.

Also, another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is movement speed. The faster a player moves, the quicker things have to be rendered. And the faster the NPC's move, the more processes per has to happen.

With a second city how are the radio stations going to work? They are going to have to create like 30 more and add more songs. That would be impossible

I just felt like posting that lol (goated movie)

In all seriousness they could do like a “Sirus XM” radio type thing. I was listening to a station based in Baton Rouge, LA the other day and I’m like 500+ miles away from there 😄

Not sure why radio is reason for an argument now :kekw: There's syndicated radio you can get everywhere or different radios stations that are owned by the same company, then local radio. They can all exist at once and if GTA VI does have multiple cities and is modern day, then I do kind of expect them to also have some sort of "internet radio". At the same time I also think they'd do the GTA V thing where some radio stations would become unavailable, but not all.

Or maybe the radio wheel will just be absolutely gigantic wherever you are because FM radio is slowly dying anyway. :p

Exactly, plus GTAV's world rendering was an issue even when it released on PC in 2015 IIRC

I’m not arguing lol 😅

And I know

I did like how they made WCTR available in the city and Blaine County Radio Community Hour available in the sticks

Is not this a common issue in racing games? In FH the rendering bugs can be crazy. But how is this an issue caused by the size of a map?

Yeah, back in the day I was like: Wow, look at all these detailed easter eggs that we have to go through multiple steps to solve them.

Now I'm just like: Yeah that's cool and all, anyway I better go blast some fools in Van Horn because that's more fun.

Those dead spaces can still be useful not only for the looks and for a bigger scale, but they'll also make trips from town to town feel like actual trips and we can have some longer police chases on such spaces or whatever.

You steal it and it somehow conveniently has an internet radio system? Nah broo...

Yea, driving from city to city in VI (if it does have 2 cities) should feel like an adventure, a roadtrip. If it has two cities there will be an inevitable moment where you have to go to the other city to hide out or something and if so it should actually feel like you're in another place, you shouldn't see any signs of the previous city, it should be that far away with a clever use of varied terrain to help hide the skyline.

Plus, ya'know, adding a bunch of deadspace gives them room to do stuff in GTAO2 or SP DLC (lol) or whatever. Space to add stuff, space to use for mission creators, etc.

Well, irl we actually travel through dead spaces with nothing interesting on them quite often getting from town to town, only woods, animals, fish, bugs, etc. I'm sure that most of the rocks irl don't have some hidden secret behind them because they're just rocks for the most part lol.

I do hope the radio stations are better in 6. Loved West Coast Classics but others in V’s was meh… Non-Stop Pop is immediately removed from my radio station wheel in my game.
