Rising British star Sopé Dìrísù, well known for appearing on the Sky Atlantic action crime-drama series Gangs of London, is reportedly being considered for Constantine on HBO Max.

It has been well-known that a Constantine series has been in development for over a year. J.J. Abrams is executive producing through his media production company Bad Robot Productions with British author Guy Bolton tapped to write the series.

The character of John Constantine previously appeared on television in his self-titled series on NBC in 2014, in which he was portrayed by Matt Ryan. Ryan’s critically-acclaimed performance saw him reprise the role in episodes of ArrowThe Flash and Batwoman, as well as full-time on  DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and in a number of animated movies.

Speaking of actors, there has been a lot of discussion in regards to who will play the character in the upcoming HBO Max series. Now, a report from The Iluminerdi (H/T: ComingSoon.net) suggests that the upcoming series may have found its star in actor Sope Dirisu.

Dirisu is best known as playing undercover cop Elliot Finch in one of Sky Atlantic’s largest rated original drama series, Gangs of London. In that series his character infiltrated The Wallace Syndicate, rising through the ranks as he tried to investigate the goings-on within the criminal underbelly of the UK. Actor Dirisu seems to be going through his own rise in the entertainment industry.

Is Sope Dirisu playing John Constantine in the HBO Max series?

According to The Illuminerdi, Dirisu is being looked at as a contender to play Constantine in the HBO Max series. Knights Edge Media revealed a logline of the project that “blends urban action, body horror, and the supernatural” in a modern-day London.

Dirisu has already experienced being in the realms of fantasy and horror with the likes of The Huntsman: Winter’s War and His House, the latter of which was directed by Remi Weekes.

In regards to action, this writer has seen the British Nigerian thespian in Gangs of London, and his performance definitely has the strengths to lead a tentpole and I.P. like Constantine.

With this original series being part of the supernatural corner of the DCEU co-produced under Bad Robot (which is also including Zatanna and Madame X), expect casting to be announced soon as principal photography for Constantine will reportedly begin during the fall of this year and continue until February 2023.
