I am getting these tiny arcade games as unique Christmas ornament.
I found the Ms. Pac-man one in a mall last year for maybe $15. I wanted to add Space Invaders next, because it's such a classic, it's possibly the first or second most memorable out of these very early arcade games.
At first I was a little disappointed, because it looked like Space Invaders only plays a few seconds of a demo, and then shuts off, unlike the Ms. Pac-Man, which you could play.
Then I turned the power switch off and on, though, and it ended up you can play the game, just like Ms. Pac-man!
It's awesome, exactly like the original version of the game, but on a screen that's about as small as a wristwatch, maybe 1 inch by 1 inch.
Perfect size for Christmas ornaments.
Very fun and funny.
Very cool nostalgia for someone like me, who was an 80s kid, and who video games were very important to.
It's disappointing that it's $30. I would have liked to pay only $5-$15. But like I said, Space Invaders is so classic and memorable, it's almost like you can't skip it.
The packaging has a small cutout for a demo mode. This "demo" is actually an attract mode that shuts off after it runs through the sequence. To play the game, you have to unbox the unit and then power cycle it to start the game up. Speaking of powering up, one big surprise from the unit was the light-up marquee. It looks great while powered on and adds a bit to the arcade authenticity.
The arcade panel itself looks great. The stickers on the panel are evenly applied and the print quality is excellent. This defiantly looks great on display (I currently have three different Tiny Arcade units on my desk with one on the way).
For its size, the unit does a decent job replicating the Ms. Pac-Man experience. The buttons and the sticks appear to be using really tiny micro-switches unlike the mushy pads that other players tend to use. This made playing on the unit, despite its small size, actually viable. Unfortunately, those looking for an arcade ROM on-board will be disappointed. While it isn't an NES/Famicom version of the game like many other players, it is a modified version of the arcade version designed around the hardware.
Sound emulation is decent (appears to be full speed), but there are a few differences seasoned Ms. Pac-Man players will notice. One of the biggest differences is what happens when you eat a power pellet. On arcade hardware, the power-up sound plays through the entire time. On this unit, it plays for a few seconds then cuts out. Not a deal-breaker since everything else sounds fine to me. However, one thing to note is that it is impossible to mute the Tiny Arcade. Sound is always on, and it can be quite loud at times.
The unit requires 3x AAA batteries to operate. Fortunately, they come pre-installed in the unit. One thing I would have liked was the option for power over USB, but sadly this is not an option. Furthermore, the unit does not stay powered on during the attract mode, so those looking for a device to stay powered on full-time for display purposes won't find that here.
Overall, this is an excellent little unit for those looking for something fun to put on their desk. It's surprisingly playable given its size and there was some care put into the unit to not make it seem like a bargain-bin experience. The controls feel responsive and the screen looks decent given its small size, but a lack of USB power for an always-on attract mode and no sound toggle take a star off my rating. Overall, these are a fantastic purchase for anyone wanting something small and retro to display on their desk at home, at work, or in a video game / arcade collection.

consigliato.

Peccato che io non sia così bravo a saldare... Non ho il coraggio di farlo.
No this probably will not replace a coin op, or a console, or even a flash version of the game on your PC in terms of controllability but it's a great novelty at a price that's cheaper than a dinner and a movie out.
