Facebook now has over one billion active users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the news in a letter this morning that reads:

"This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.

Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too."

Along with the note, Facebook released a factsheet that reveals a number of stats. Of the one billion users, 600 million are accessing Facebook via mobile. The median new user age is "about 22," down from 23 two years ago, and 26 four years ago. Facebook has now seen a total of 1.13 trillion 'likes' and 219 billion photo uploads, 17 billion of which were location-tagged.

In an interview with Businessweek, Zuckerberg says "there is this Facebook equivalent of Moore’s Law." Each year the amount of stuff that each individual shares is growing at this exponential rate." He adds that, now his site has over one billion users, "everyone can start to rely on us as infrastructure. That's a pretty big shift." The CEO is now looking forward to helping "connect the next billion people."

Facebook's "active users" stat doesn't take into account the fake and spam accounts that the site has been attempting to remove lately. The social network announced 955 million active users as of June 30th at its Q2 2012 earnings announcement; the final 45 million users have taken just over three months to acquire.
