Sharpen your battle-axes and get ready for some more immortal violence, because The Old Guard 2 is bringing in some new faces. Joining the original cast are Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians).
The original Old Guard told the story of the titular team of undying mercenaries, led by their eldest member, Andy (Charlize Theron), as they take in a new immortal addition (KiKi Layne). Layne and Theron are returning, alongside the other members of the team, including Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli. The sequel’s cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Old Guard’s CIA handler.
There’s no word yet on where the new film might take the Old Guard, but the first film’s post-credits scene offers a clue: After years of drowning over and over again in an iron maiden, former Old Guard member Quynh (Veronica Ngo) is back, and she can’t possibly be too happy. As for Thurman and Golding, it remains to be seen what roles they’ll take on. (Although, Thurman would obviously be uniquely qualified to play an immortal god-warrior, as she already fills that role in real life.)
The Old Guard 2 will be directed by Victoria Mahoney and written by Greg Rucka, who also wrote the graphic novel series on which the films are based. Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the first Old Guard, is producing the sequel. It should hit Netflix sometime in the next century or so (or, hopefully, in the next year).
