“John Wick” Going To Have “A Rest”

Lionsgate

The upcoming fourth “John Wick” film has been scoring rave reviews and is on track to be the franchise’s biggest box-office draw to date with projections for the U.S. opening weekend the highest for the franchise.

However, the two key talents involved of actor Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski are likely to take a break after the most recent one hits cinemas – even as distributor Lionsgate will no doubt want them to continue.

Indeed Lionsgate is set to expand the franchise soon with the spin-off film “Ballerina” in which Reeves makes an appearance, along with the TV series prequel “The Continental” due to air later this year.

Speaking with THR just days ahead of his film’s release in cinemas, Stahelski spoke about his hesitancy to do a fifth film and indicates he doesn’t think a fifth film is going to happen right now – but he won’t rule it out at this point:

“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give ‘John Wick’ a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute.

‘Wicks’ always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan. It’s always like, three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September.

Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, ‘What do you think?’ We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”

Stahelski’s name remains attached to several projects right now including the long-gestating “Highlander” reboot and the film adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation video game “Ghost of Tsushima”.
