God of War Ragnarok Mystical Heirloom and Troll locations explained

The God of War Ragnarok Mystical Heirloom Relic and troll locations around the Nine Realms are inherently linked, as the Heirloom is used to unfreeze statues of trolls and turn them into... well, real trolls that you can beat in boss battles to earn the very rare and powerful Steinbjorn armor. Though very hard to find, these encounters with trolls are some of the toughest moments in God of War Ragnarok, and definitely worth hunting down if you're out to clean up all the post-game content - and get some of the best armor in the game. With that in mind, we'll show you how to find the Mystical Heirloom Relic in God of War Ragnarok, all the troll locations, and how to get the Steinbjorn armor for yourself.

Where to find the Mystical Heirloom in God of War Ragnarok

The God of War Ragnarok Mystical Heirloom can be found South of the Lake of Nine, just down from Tyr's temple. Look for a wall of ice with a glowing spot you can use the Draupnir Spear on to break though (if you don't have that yet use our God of War Ragnarok Special Equipment page which explains more). Past the wall there's a Scorn Pole on the right, and a corpse on the left with the Mystical Heirloom nearby. The gang suggests it's used to counter some sort of sleeping curse, and the receipt scroll found nearby claims it'll lead to treasure - both are right. It's not part of the God of War Ragnarok Treasure Maps though, which see you using actual maps to find actual treasure. 

What does the Mystical Heirloom do in God of War Ragnarok?

The God of War Ragnarok Mystical Heirloom is a Relic that can only awaken Troll statues hidden around the game. That is all it can do and, unlike all the other Relics you can find, it serves no purpose in combat. However, this isn't immediately obvious as it's function is initially a mystery, but hints from Mimir and its description allude to its purpose. 

Equip the Mystical Heirloom in your Relic slot as you would with any other Relic and activate it with L1+Circle. This does absolutely nothing unless you're near one of the troll statues (or the dragon one in Svartalfheim) and it'll come to life, starting a boss fight! Remember, since the Mystical Heirloom doesn't do anything beyond trigger a boss fight, you should swap it out as soon as you can for a Relic with a proper use.

God of War Ragnarok Troll locations and statues

There are three God of War Ragnarok Troll locations in total, with the last location giving you two. Using the Mystical Heirloom will see these stone statues come alive and turn into boss fights. Here's who they are and where you can find them:  

1. Midgard Troll statue (Blodugr Steinn)
2. Alfheim Troll statue (Bjarg Stormr)
3. Vanaheim Troll statues (Golrab of the Ashes and Golrab of the Frost)
4. Svartalfheim Dragon statue

These Trolls can be encountered in any order, but we recommend the order above, as it's the order of difficulty. There are a few other trolls found in the world, but they're not part of this statue set and won't drop the Slumber Stones you need to craft the full Steinbjorn armor set. 

Midgard Troll location, Blodugr Steinn

The first Troll statue is located close to the Mystical Heirloom, in the southwest region of the Lake of Nine. Follow the path in the bottom right to find a chain that rises up to the blacksmith's shop. Beyond that is the Derelict Outpost - vault the first chasm to enter a large, open area full of cranes and just ahead of you on the right is the first Troll, Blodugr Steinn. Walk up to it and use the Mystical Heirloom to begin the fight. 

Alfheim Troll location, Bjarg Stormr

The second Troll location is in Alfheim - specifically in the Forbidden Sands desert wasteland that opens up once you can open the blue symbol rune locks. (If you don't know what that means you'll have to keep playing until you do.) Go to the far-West side of the Forbidden Sands to find a small arena with the Troll statue of Bjarg Stormr. This one isn't any harder than the previous fight, so if you managed Blodugr without any troube, you can probably defeat Bjarg. 

Vanaheim Troll location, Golrab of the Ashes and Golrab of the Frost

The final troll location is a dual boss fight so it's a bit tougher. Head to the River Delta in Vanaheim, then follow the river to the spot on the map above, Noatun's Garden, an optional area on the riverbank with various puzzles, chests, monsters and poisonous scorn poles. The statues are easy to find here - it's a small area and they're not hidden. Look at the easternmost building to see the two trolls standing like guards either side of the door.

This is definitely the hardest fight - not only are there two of them, the blue Frost Troll is resistant to your Leviathan Axe, while the red Ash Troll is resistant to your Chaos Blades. Plus all the Scorn Poles around mean it's easy to back up into a cloud of poison for extra problems. Focusing Golrab of the Ashes with the axe first, as it's a better weapon for one-on-one fighting, and stay out of the other troll's way. Once the Ash Troll is down turn your full attention on the remaining one.

Svartalfheim Dragon location, The Everlasting

This secret, petrified Dragon known as The Everlasting is found on Dragon Beach (I wonder why it's called that) in Svartalfheim. It's directly north of Nidavellir on the in-game map, but you can reach it quickly by sailing roughly east from the Watchtower Mystic Gateway. Once you've landed on the beach, run to the right of the massive, wooden bridge supports and you'll spot the stone Dragon perched on a big rock. Use the Mystical Heirloom to un-petrify it and start the boss fight.

Defeating this Dragon isn't necessary for the Steinbjorn armor set, but will provide some materials that you might need for the Dragon-Scaled armor set if you haven't slain enough dragons yet. Kill The Everlasting boss and it'll disintegrate into three Dragon Claws, the Jotunheim's Force Amulet Enchantment, 40 Bonded Leather, 75 God of War Ragnarok Shattered Runes, and 50,000 Hacksilver.

As with many of the Dragon bosses, the Draupnir Spear is an excellent weapon for The Everlasting and can be used to score stunning blows if you hit the glowing spots on its neck. After it takes flight, detonate impaled spears as it dives down to attack and you can knock it out of the air.

God of War Ragnarok Troll troll rewards and Steinbjorn armor

Each Troll you kill drops a unique Slumber Stone, as well as some more general rewards. These stones are then used to craft Steinbjorn armor - a strong contender for the God of War Ragnarok Best Armor with some of the best stats for pure defense in the game, that actually grants perks to getting hit. Kill all the Trolls and the Slumber Stones they drop will be enough for you to craft the entire set, the specific details of which (in their base form) are as follows:

• Steinbjorn Plackart (chest)
  • 123 Defense
  • After significant damage is taken, Kratos' attacks will restore some lost health for a time.
• Steinbjorn Gauntlets (wrist):
  • 22 Strength
  • 55 Defense
  • Moderate Luck chance to stagger and inflict stun damage to nearby enemies when damage is taken.
• Steinbjorn Waist Guard (waist):
  • 77 Defense
  • Moderate Luck chance to stagger and inflict stun damage to nearby enemies when damage is taken.

It's a tanky armor set, used to turn being punched into less of a negative experience. As a final reward for killing the Trolls, players will also get the Momentous Stride Amulet Enchantment, which charges your Permafrost/Immolation/Maelstrom skill gauges when you pull off a last-second dodge.
