Evaluation of caves and karst sites as geological heritage should regard three aspects related to function of these objects and their perception: a) caves as shrouded in mystery “gates to underground” (anthropocentric approach); b) caves as places of uniqueminerals and rocks formation (natural approach); c) karst sites and caves aswitnesses of geological past (scientific approach). Regarding these aspects as criteria of evaluation, 25 objects of super regional value have been selected.Majority of them represent important scientific sites. Studies of the sites enable reconstruction of palaeoenvironment (climate) and fauna in Cenozoic, especially Younger Pleistocene in the Polish uplands, as well as reconstruction of geological evolution of the Holy CrossMts. and the Cracow region after Variscan tectonical movements (Permian, Triassic, Jurassic). Majority of the sites are legally protected, but four are located in active quarries and mines, in danger of destruction.

Underground fieldwork – A cultural and social history of cave cartography and surveying instruments in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century2015 •
At the turn of the 20th century, the practical examination of caves went through a radical change. Governmental organizations and private clubs were founded in an attempt to establish speleology as an independent academic subject. In contrast to earlier cave visitors, travelers began entering underground areas and attributing the names of “explorers” or “researchers” to themselves. Fieldwork—especially cave surveying and cartography—became common practice in speleology and such work provided important clues on speleogenesis, which was a controversial issue in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the fact that speleologists began separating themselves from ordinary cave visitors and tourists, tools and instruments for cave exploration and mapping, such as carbide lamps, ropes, compasses, clinometers, and drawing boards, became the emblems of speleology. Through historical discourse analysis, this paper examines whether this change in the status and practice of underground fieldwork had an effect on the self-perception of speleology and led to new forms of social cooperation and control between speleologists. Further questions address the manner in which the usage of new surveying instruments and the relevance of cave mapping modified the scientific research parameters and the cultural perceptions of the subterranean world. As a contribution to speleo-history, this approach opens a new perspective on the social and cultural dimensions of speleological fieldwork as well as the historical, scientific, and political dynamics in which they were involved. Sources for this research comprised historical scientific papers on cave mapping, textbooks, and archive materials from the Austrian National Library, the Natural History Museum in Vienna, and the Austrian Speleological Association.

POST-NEOLITHIC OCCUPATION IN TUNEL WIELKI CAVE (SOUTHERN POLAND)2020 •
Post-Neolithic cave occupation in Poland remains insufficiently recognised. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the analysis of pottery and metal objects discovered in Tunel Wielki Cave (Ojców area, SE Poland). The artefacts were collected during three fieldwork campaigns in 1967-68 and 2018. The results show that the cave was occupied at least several times. The most ephemeral settlement traces can be dated to the Early Bronze Age and these may be related to the Trzciniec culture. The site was more intensively used in the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age by communities representing the Lusatian culture. Roman Period artefacts are very scarce. Traces of most intensive use of the cave come from the Middle Ages. One can determine artefacts conditionally dated from the 11 th to the 12 th century, as well as younger objects, dated to the 13 th − early 14 th c. Single pieces of pottery can be attributed to the Modern period. The obtained results point to multiple short-term visits. The cave fill does not bear traces of permanent occupation during the Post-Neolithic period.
