NVIDIA RTX 4090 hits $2,000/€2,000

This time higher is not better.

We all love when graphics cards hit large numbers, but not if that refers to power consumption and pricing. The RTX 4090 ticks both right now as the flagship NVIDIA GPU is now hitting $2,000 and €2,000 at most retailers.

We checked the largest US retailers for stock information on RTX 4090, and it looks terrible. BestBuy is currently not offering any 4090 for sale, while MicroCenter’s stock is limited only to certain physical stores, there is no way to buy RTX 4090 with shipping, and only a handful of cards can be found in stock at individual stores. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition is not available at any store. The cheapest 4090 can be found at GameStop (of all places) or Newegg ($1,999) for Liquid Cooled MSI model. Unfortunately, only a few models are in stock, with some retailers only offering one or two models or even one card physically available for in-store pick.

According to Hardware.info, the average price for RTX 4090 has now hit 2,068 EUR. This is a 16.9% higher price in one month, which also means the card has again surpassed its MSRP of 1,829 EUR. It is noteworthy that the card was initially priced at €1,949, however, the price was swiftly adjusted due to the depreciation of the US Dollar in comparison to the Euro. In May, the card cost €1,769 MSRP, but many stores sold it for much less (below €1,700). Now the lowest price is in the €1950 range.

The probable cause behind this scenario is the export restrictions imposed by the US government, specifically on certain countries. It has been reported that NVIDIA has been directing a significant portion of its RTX 4090 GPU stock to China before the complete implementation of the ban. As of November 16th, both NVIDIA and its board partners can no longer ship RTX 4090 GPUs to China. So now, with the ban in place, the situation should improve over time for other regions.

To put it differently, the present moment is likely the worst to buy the RTX 4090, and it is highly recommended to postpone the purchase until the GPU market experiences normalization. To add to that, new RTX 40 SUPER models, such as the 4080 SUPER, are on the horizon, presenting a potential and more cost-effective alternative to the currently overpriced RTX 4090.
