Dexter: New Blood is dead. Long live… Dexter: The Early Years?
Multiple sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Showtime will not be moving forward with a second season of its phenomenally successful revival, Dexter: New Blood. However, the network is far from done with the Dexter franchise (more on that in a moment.)
The follow-up to Dexter: New Blood — which had been in development — would’ve found Harrison (played by The Good Lord Bird‘s Jack Alcott) picking up where his late father (Michael C. Hall) left off. (In the Jan. 2022 finale, Harrison killed his dear ol’ dad after discovering that he had murdered the guilty-of-nothing Sgt. Logan.)
The decision not to move forward with Season 2 comes as something as a surprise considering New Blood ranked as Showtime’s most-watched series in the premium cabler’s history, with the 10-episode continuation averaging 8 million weekly viewers. But as noted above, the demise of New Blood does not spell the end of the Dexter brand. Far from it.
According to insiders, Showtime — which will soon merge with Paramount+ — is exploring a number of new iterations of Dexter, including a prequel series centered around a young version of the titular antihero.
A Showtime rep was not available for comment on the quasi-cancellation of New Blood or the future of the franchise.
Immediately following the finale of New Blood, showrunner Clyde Phillips told TVLine that a potential second season is “all in Showtime’s hands,” adding, “If they were to call me and say, ‘We want to do [a second season], we want you to figure it out,’ I’m pretty busy, but I would drop everything I’m doing and jump right into it. I would love to do it, but it’s really up to Showtime.”
myself i like the show dexter. i want more of it.
Oh no. I’ve been waiting for more Dexter. Can’t get enough.
Dexter’s dead. Why would there be a season 2?
Presumably he would be the Harry equivalent.
Yeah. And I think that would have been good. Michael C Hall IS Dexter. Not sure I’d be interested in a prequel series without his involvement
Maybe he will narrate it like Sheldon on Young Sheldon and The Rock on Young Rock
I agree only original dexter I want more!!
100% Agree! Do a redo of last episode! Or make it a dream …Hey if Dallas can do it? There is NO DEXTER, without DEXTER! So, make it work!
Exactly. The internal guide for the serial killer son. Just like daddy was to Dex. Predictable, sure… but the circle of life is a real thing. ;)
The article explains what the premise would have been
Then change the premise! Or lose your core audience since season 1 !!!
No, Please
You could just you know not watch it
You could just, you know, not comment and move on with your life.
You can also not comment on the comment and move along with your life too!
While you’re correct, it seems odd to me always when people want shows canceled or not made. Why not just not watch it and let those who enjoy it, watch it?
Sometimes it’s because the point of a good story is that it ends. Its time is finite. But wishing cancellation on something otherwise is mean. I didn’t watch this new Dexter because the last season I couldn’t stand, but the last series ended, so I didn’t need to continue.
But this story DID end, so if you’re ready to leave, just leave… and leave any sequels to the people who’d still like to spend time in the universe. There’s no proverbial blue balls to deal with
Jesus not everything needs a franchise. They do know it was Michael that made the show right not exactly the show itself
They managed to make a worse ending than the original with New Blood, so I have no faith that whatever they come up with will even be worth watching.
How do you figure?
Dexter’s whole battle has always been the monster inside of. His dark passenger. He always wanted to be a source of good and justice, albeit in his sick and twisted way. As soon as he started killing innocent people to protect himself it became clear his dark passenger had won.
He did not want to see his son go down the same path. It makes sense.
Though one could argue killing his father would send Harrison on a dark path anyway
I wasn’t all that interested in Harrison anyway. If they made a series about Batista I would be more interested.
Harrison was very blah, no tingles, no compelling whatever, he could have lived or died or killed anybody, he was just blah.
I would not watch a series about him. It’s only about Michael C. Hall. And they stupidly did him in. The writers could have come up with something other than death. SO it’s over.
MCH didn’t want to do more
Heh I’m sure he said that when they ended the original run too. He’ll be back.
Call it “La pasión”
They killed the series when they killed Dexter. None of my friends (as well as me) who watched Dexter were interested in a Harrison-based series.
THIS!!
Not worth a 2nd series, boring and no way as tense and edge of seat.
I actually prefer this to a Harrison series. Sounds promising.
For the people upset about it existing, nobody will make you watch it.
I would not be interested in a Harrisson show after he killed Dexter but I am even more skeptical about a young Dexter show. The actor who will land the role will have big shoes to fill, Micheal C Hall is what made Dexter so good.
I never got into this like I did with Dexter. Maybe just move on.
I wouldn’t have mind exploring a new Season with following Harrison as the main character and Dexter appearing as his dark passenger, like Harry was to Dexter. That way Michael C. Hall wouldn’t have to commit fully. Whether they continue with Harrison or a young Dexter, it’s still going to be the feat of trying to find another actor who can successfully carry the show like Michael C. Hall did.
I only want this if MCH is going to play young Dexter with the terrible wig they used when they did flashbacks in the original series.
lol!
I do not see this working – especially as Harry”was his mentor and taught him the code. I think he is too old to be playing a younger version and I don’t think a recast of a key role would work. The only one that could have worked would have been MCH as Dexter/Harrison’s ghostly mentor but if he is done then so is Dexter.
If they want to continue the “Dexter-Verse” how about the originals of the Trinity killer?
There was nothing wrong with the sequel season, except the terrible plotting and total mishandling of Dexter’s character…. So how would a prequel series fix these problems?
Ugh, I hate prequels. I never care what happened BEFORE in a story.
Besides most of the tension of the OG show was wondering if he was ever gonna get caught. Obviously in this show he never will.
I guess you haven’t watched 1883 or 1923 – both prequels and totally excellent! They provide more of a big picture view of Yellowstone and at times are far superior.
The difference with those prequels is that they’re about different people. with almost an entirely new cast of characters. The repeat characters go from children to adults and are played by different actors. Plus those prequels are more “limited series” in style.
A Dexter prequel is an attempt to create a similar show, just younger.
I’d much rather have a show about a younger Dexter than his son who I could care less about so this is good.
bring on dexter again with the original dexter
I was at least hoping for a couple more episodes of Harrison being haunted by Dexter’s ghost. Cause I really enjoyed “New Blood”. I don’t think I’d be interested in watching Dexter: Old Blood with a new kid playing a teen Dexter. But then again, who knows? maybe it will be good.
I love the show Dexter so much! But Michael C. Hall is Dexter! He is awesome playing this character!
I wish they would bring Dexter back and have him do his killings and have his son do the same but in different towns.
Maybe having Dexter trying to save his son from killing but at the same time trying to stop himself from killing.
Good, ending was garbage.
Here we go again. They can’t let a good show just end, they have to tear it to pieces with prequels that nobody asked for. Unless it’s adapted from another book? No didn’t think so, then what’s the point. Plus we didn’t need a season 2 of bland Harrison either, worst actor to play his son ever.
Totally agree with everything, Finn!
It was so highly rated because of Deter Michael C Hall and for no other reason. Without him it’s nothing, killing Dexter was the worst thing they could have done for the series.
Dexter: New Blood did not need a sequel so I glad this decision was made. Let Harrison be. He seemed happy at the end driving away leaving all the stress behind.
Terrible ending. Harrison was a bore but had potential with Dexter. Not interested in a prequel. The original Dexter did enough on Dexter’s childhood. If Paramount is taking over Showtime I guess Dexter’s producers are pissed enough to ruin the most successful show showtime ever had.
