Several outlets visited the set of Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Homecoming” a few months back and their reports went live this morning. While much of the content was already known, some new quotes about overall plans for the franchise have become a little bit clearer.
Producer Eric Carroll revealed on set that the plan is to do multiple movies where Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is in high school and at least two more are planned – each corresponding to his remaining years as a student. Going forward, the films will also be considered as just another film on Marvel’s MCU schedule. Carroll says:
“Going forward we would definitely treat them all as the same slate. So we would be as strategic about where future Spider-Man movies fall in the MCU of it all as we would if Sony weren’t involved, because there’s nothing in it for us or Sony to put a movie out at the wrong time or start confusing the continuity.”
Carroll says ‘Homecoming’ will distance itself from the previous movies in terms of treading over the same material and characters – so expect less of Uncle Ben’s legacy, stuff with Harry and Norman Osborn, and the like:
“We want to tread lightly with what’s been done in the past films as far as The Osbornes and things like that. So I don’t think we’re going directly down that route. We figured honestly if there was a way to do this movie without mentioning anyone who has been in past films, with the exception of staples like Flash Thompson and Aunt May, that that might be a good thing to do.”
Of the future, producer Amy Pascal says:
“I think we found the right formula and I think everybody is going to want the right thing to continue. And I think that there’s a surprisingly generous and cooperative thing and if it works, then it’s going to work for everybody.”
Amongst other facts learned, the film will include a flashback to 2012 with scenes set in the wake of “The Avengers” and the Battle of New York, while most will be just after the events of ‘Civil War’. Actor Michael Keaton says his villain character sees himself as a victim, has a “Tony Soprano mentality” and just “wants his shot at the good life”. Finally, Peter’s suit includes its own version JARVIS.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” will pop into theaters from July 7th.
