- I want to play this game in English. Is there an official translation?
No, and there probably never will be.

- Why not?
Because ZUN is a busy man who doesn't know English. He would rather leave this in the hands of the western fan-community, who have had years of experience with this kind of work already.

- But is there a fan patch?
As the matter of fact, yes. The English fan patch (and other languages) has been long complete since the retail version release in August. And we just managed to integrate it into the Steam version.

- How can I get it?
Great question! Here's how:


The Touohu Community Reliant Automatic Patcher (thcrap for short), is a self-updating patching system for the whole Touhou series, maintained by the thpatch community (http://thpatch.net/wiki/Touhou_Patch_Center).
When you launch the games through thcrap, it will automatically grab the latest builds and patch contents from the server, which means that you only have to download the patcher once and then never bother with updates again.

There are two ways to run thcrap.
If you're completely new to Touhou and only want to play Hidden Star in Four Seasons in English, try the standalone patcher:

• Go to https://www.thpatch.net/wiki/Standalone_Patches and download the standalone patch for Touhou 16.

• Extract the contents to "[Your Steam Directory]\steamapps\common\th16".
• Start the patch with "th16 (thpatch-en).exe" (The Steam client will have to be open, or else it will launch automatically)


The other, more thorough method to run thcrap is the central installer, which also lets you scan for other games in the series, apply languages from all over the world, and other cool features...

• Get the full thcrap installation from https://www.thpatch.net/wiki/Touhou_Patch_Center:Download
• Follow the setup instructions on the download page. There's also an image and video guide.
• When thcrap_configure asks to scan for games, point it to "[Your Steam Directory]\steamapps\common\th16".
(There is a feature planned to automatically scan for installed Steam games, coming soon)
• Start the patched game through the shortcut, for example, "th16 (en)".

• Optionally you can add the thcrap shortcut or "th16 (thpatch-en).exe" as a non-Steam game to the interface.
• Library → Add a game… → Add a Non-Steam game…
• Browse to the thcrap directory and pick thcrap_loader.exe
• Right-click on the thcrap_loader entry in the games list and click Properties
• Make sure there's a space at the end of the Target: line, then add th16 "yourconfig.js", where yourconfig.js is the name of the configuration file created by thcrap_configure.
• Give it a nicer name, and a nicer icon if you want.
• Should work then.

Please note that the Steam release of Touhou 16 comes with mild DRM. thcrap circumvents this to play the patched game, but it will not let you play it without the legally bought Steam version.

The same procedure also works with the demo verison of Touhou 16, which is installed under "[Your Steam Directory]\steamapps\common\th16tr".


Seasonal item patch:
Due to common complaints, the standalone patch also includes a patch which makes the Touhou 16 seasonal items transparent, for better visibility.
If you want to disable this patch, just open thcrap\thpatch-en.js with a text editor and remove the line "archive": "DTM/transparent_season_items/".

Update disclaimer: If, for any reason, you do not wish for thcrap to connect online, you can simply delete thcrap_update.dll contained inside the thcrap folder.
This way, the patch will use only the available assets and stay offline forever.
