The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remake returns Enix’s classic series to contemporary platforms, introducing a host of new features and enhancements. One of the most notable additions is an auto-battle system that wasn’t present in the original releases.
It helps remove some of the tedious repetition, but creator Yuji Horii and producer Masaaki Hoyasaka warn that it shouldn’t be relied upon in difficult fights.
In an interview, the developers explained the role of auto-battle. Technology has progressed significantly since this mechanic first appeared in Dragon Quest IV. According to Horii, in the earlier games he wanted players to be actively involved in combat. However, the HD remake is tailored to modern expectations and to players who prefer auto-battle, so the feature has been made more convenient.
The Tactics system looks simple at first glance: five combat presets (one specific to Dragon Quest II). Options like “Focus on Healing” or “Do Not Use MP” may seem limiting, but the auto-battle adapts intelligently to current situations, allocating resources and actions judiciously.
The developers emphasize that auto-battle will ease routine encounters, but bosses and powerful enemies still require manual control. Horii recommends using auto-battle for grinding, while taking direct control for tougher opponents.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC.
