The studio lost financial backing from NetEase last month, which appears to have triggered a frantic search for new investment and ultimately led to the closure decision. Still, Street left the door open to a last-minute backer in his announcement.
He thanked the many people who reached out offering help, introductions, or assistance in raising capital, noting that it only takes one viable investor to change the studio’s fate.
This development arrives amid other recent industry upheavals — including large-scale layoffs at Amazon and the cessation of new development on Amazon Games’ MMO New World — making it a difficult period for MMO fans. There remains a small possibility Ghost receives funding before the planned shutdown, but prospects are uncertain.
