When a Zoi dies, players can now choose “On to the Afterlife” and continue playing their character as a ghost. This ghost form lasts three in-game days, so it’s a temporary state rather than a permanent mode. After that period, the Zoi must either ascend or, failing that, attend a funeral and depart permanently. Krafton notes that reincarnation is not included in this update, though it remains planned for a future patch.
Ghosts have their own instincts and unique abilities, adding meaningful variety to gameplay. The update also adds funerals, funeral homes, and cemeteries — the first concrete steps toward exploring the darker themes the team teased. But version 0.4.0 isn’t just about the afterlife: numerous new traits and personality characteristics have been added for living Zois, including the amusingly named “Emotionally Needy.”
Zois have been overhauled to provide deeper emotional nuance and more believable behavior. New interactions cover every age and life stage to improve realism and avoid oddities like previously problematic infant behavior. The patch notes for 0.4.0 are extensive and worth reading in full to see everything that changed.
