Reacting to the reviews on Twitter, producer Hirohito Suzuki wrote that reading the coverage brought a deep sense of relief and gratitude: “After reading many reviews, I feel a sense of relief—we may have truly delivered what we set out to create. It feels as though I’ve finally returned to my hometown after a long journey of game development. If this story stays with you, even just a little, it would mean the world to us.”

Whether a title lands an 84 or a 64 on Metacritic, it’s heartening to hear Suzuki feel the team realized their vision — especially after the 2020 game’s aggressive gacha mechanics dampened the reception of an otherwise compelling story that many consider among the series’ best.

And yes — our roundup of the best JRPGs is guaranteed to spark lively debate in the comments.
