A mysterious stone tablet might hold the key to the next Elder Scrolls Online expansion

TES Online

Dataminers recently revealed that the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls Online would take place in the Khajiit homeland of Elsweyr, but Bethesda seems to be teasing something else as well. While we’re gearing up for an official announcement next week, a mysterious message has been posted to Twitter pointing in a very different direction.

The message was posted to Twitter by MMO journalist Larry Everett. The photo, which you can view below, shows a cracked black tablet featuring a dragon’s head, and a letter from Imperial high chancellor Abnur Tharn.

The letter reads “Adventurer, I have followed your progress with interest and deemed you worthy of rendering assistance. Knowledge has come into my possession that will help me end the misguided Three Banners War and restore peace to Tamriel. You shall accompany me. Be ready to answer my summons. And answer it quickly… I hate to be kept waiting.” It’s not clear exactly what Abnur’s getting at, but the fact that he’s involved at all is quite confusing given what else we know about the new content.

Bethesda is yet to officially confirm what was revealed in the datamine, but earlier this week the game’s official Twitter account posted that “the cat’s out of the bag,” announcing a stream set to take place next week. That pun all but confirms the accuracy of the datamine, but I’ve not seen the community piece together the meaning behind the letter.

My best guess – and this is purely speculation – is that Tharn is somehow involved in the year-long war against the Dragons mentioned in the original datamine. That would explain the tablet and the cryptic nature of the letter, without going against what’s been uncovered about Elsweyr.

Whatever’s about to happen, we’ll probably find out next week. The announcement stream is set for 17:00 EST/22:00 GMT on January 15, so hopefully everything will fall into place then.
